My
first exposure to Bob Dylan's music was back in 1974, at the age of
14. A childhood friend of mine had invited me over to his house after school
one day to listen to music. He was a
'Bobby' fanatic. That single afternoon, he played track after track, explaining each song in lengthy
detail. I listened intently. I must confess however, at first I didn't quite like
Bob Dylan's music and found his voice dreadful, to say the least.
After about 3 or 4 more visits to my friends house, and endless hours of listening to
Bob's music, I began to really like it. The more I began to understand the lyric's, the
more I wanted to learn who this man really was, this Robert (Bob Dylan) Zimmerman.
Eventually, I began my own collection of his albums. It started
out with one here and one there until it almost became a 'Gold
Rush' to try and get all his albums that were released until that
stage. In 1978, I had managed to collect all of his albums up to
and including 'Street Legal' with the exception of his first
release album, 'Bob Dylan' from 1962.
It became a mad scramble amongst my friends to see who would first
get that album to complete our collection. Eventually I got a copy
and I was up to date. In 1979 he brought out his first Gospel
album, 'Slow Train Coming' which was followed by 'Saved' in 1980
and 'Shot of Love' in 1981. Then there was a gap of two years
before he eventually released 'Infidels' in 1983.
I have enjoyed Bob's music over the decades with songs such as
'All Along The Watchtower' and 'The Times Are A-Changing' being favorites
amongst the many that I have played, listen to and analyzed.
I have found it a challenge to seek the message that Dylan was
trying to deliver, which wasn't always clear-cut, yet a sense of
pride was achieved when you finally stumbled across the meaning,
the message or event that Dylan was conveying.
Although I enjoy all his albums, some such as 'Desire' and 'Street
Legal' are firm favorites. The song 'Hurricane' on his 'Desire'
album has always been a big favorite due to it's truth about
Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter, a boxer who was wrongfully convicted of
murder. This song has also become the title track for the movie
'Hurricane' which is based on the true story of Rubin 'Hurricane'
Carter. Other songs that reach down deep are 'Masters of War' and
'A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall' from his 1963 album 'The Freewheelin'. These songs reach down deep about the horrors
of war.
Overall, Bob
Dylan's music has found a home in my life and will remain embedded
in me. Artists have come and gone, but a 'Living Legend' such as
Bob Dylan, stands out amongst others, and his music will never die
or age. A song such as his 1964 hit, 'The Times They Are A-Changin', will always remain applicable whether sung in the
60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, or into the 'New Millennium'.
I hope you enjoy this site and that you will return again soon -
